Packing right makes every hike smoother and safer. Use this checklist to make sure you and your dog have what you need before you hit the trail — whether it's a quick afternoon loop or a full-day adventure.
The Essentials
- A well-fitted harness. A comfortable, secure harness gives you gentle control without straining your dog's neck. Measure first with our Size Guide.
- Leash. A sturdy leash — a bungee-style leash absorbs sudden pulls on uneven terrain.
- Water and a collapsible bowl. Bring more water than you think you'll need for both of you.
- Waste bags. Always pack out what your dog leaves behind.
- ID and tags. Make sure your dog's ID is current, and consider a microchip.
For Longer or Rugged Hikes
- Dog first-aid basics. Vet wrap, gauze, tweezers (for ticks and splinters), and any medication your dog needs.
- Paw protection. Booties or paw balm for hot, rocky, or icy terrain.
- Snacks. High-energy treats to keep your dog fueled.
- Towel. For muddy paws and creek crossings.
- Light or reflective gear. If you might be out near dusk.
Before You Leave the House
- Check that dogs are allowed on your trail and whether a leash is required.
- Check the weather — heat and cold both affect your dog.
- Inspect your harness, leash, buckles, and stitching for wear. Don't use gear that's damaged or loose (see our Product Safety & Use Disclaimer).
- Trim your dog's nails and give paws a quick check.
A Note on Fit
Gear only works when it fits. A harness that's too loose can slip; too tight can chafe. Use the two-finger rule — you should be able to slide two fingers between the harness and your dog — and recheck after your dog has been moving for a while. Our guide on how to fit a dog harness correctly covers the details.
