Trail Basics

New to adventuring with your dog? Here are the fundamentals every trail day is built on.

Before You Go

  • Check that dogs are allowed on your chosen trail, park, or campsite, and whether leashes are required.
  • Make sure your dog's harness fits correctly — measure chest and neck and follow our Size Guide.
  • Inspect your harness, leash, buckles, and stitching before every outing.
  • Pack water and a collapsible bowl for both of you.
  • Bring waste bags, and plan to pack out everything you bring in.

Fit & Comfort on the Trail

Use the two-finger fit rule: you should be able to slide two fingers between the harness and your dog's body — secure, but not tight. Recheck the fit after your dog has walked, climbed, and moved around for a while, as it can shift.

Using the Top Handle

The top handle is designed for close control and quick guidance — for example, steadying your dog on a narrow ledge or busy trailhead. It is not meant for lifting, carrying, dragging, or suspending your dog. Please see our Product Safety & Use Disclaimer for full guidance.

On-Trail Etiquette

  • Keep your dog under control and yield to other hikers, bikers, and horses.
  • Stay on marked trails to protect plants and wildlife.
  • Respect wildlife — keep your dog from chasing or disturbing animals.
  • Always clean up after your dog and pack out waste.

Know Your Dog's Limits

Build up distance gradually, watch for signs of fatigue or overheating, and take breaks in the shade. Every dog is different — supervise them closely and let their comfort set the pace.
